A calm place in the countryside
The story of this little Tyrolean village is a real success story. Step by step, Berwang gradually switched from agriculture to tourism.
The village of Berwang, home of our hotel for your ultimate ski holidays in the Alps, is located at 1,300 metres above sea level – making it the highest village in the area. The village’s name is formed by the word parts “ber” and “wang”, which can be translated with “bear meadow”. It is believed that the first settlers came to Berwang from Gurgeltal valley, and in the course of several centuries, they switched from agriculture to tourism. In 1949, the first ski lift in the village was built. Today, Berwang is a lovely Tyrolean village with a few hundred inhabitants; many historic monuments remind visitors and villagers about the past of the place. For example, the history of the St. Jakob church dates back to the year 1430! The Berwang museum of local history is always worth a visit: in the museum’s kitchen, you can even watch how traditional bread is made! Of course, time has changed Berwang, but the villagers’ friendliness and awareness of traditions is still the same.
